Architecture, Partially Similar, Second Year Undergraduate Studio

This studio introduced students to computatonal design through a study of the part to the whole relationships in  architectural precedents from Italy, Spain, Turkey, Iran, and Uzbekistan.  Students began by performing a detailed geometric analysis of the precedent to understand the logic and ordering of their construction.  They then translated this into the visual progamming language of Grasshopper inside Rhinoceros 3D.  From that point forward, students executed all their drawings, digital models, renderings, and other artifacts from a single visual program.  The design of the project was based in the design of the visual program.  The part to whole relationships in the precedent projects became the computational structure of the visual programs.  The innumerable new projects that the students produced were a product of the students’ ability to imagine and think creatively through a programming language.
